Lamplighter – June 2019

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On June 9, the Christian Church celebrates the Festival of Pentecost.

Ten days after Jesus’ ascension into heaven, God poured out His Holy Spirit upon Jesus’ followers, who had gathered in the Upper Room in Jerusalem. There was the sound of a rushing wind. What appeared to be flames of fire came to rest upon the heads of Jesus’ disciples. These same disciples then found themselves proclaiming God’s praise in the languages of all the people drawn to the spot by the sound of the rushing wind.

When the people asked, “what does this mean?” Peter told those gathered that they, God’s people, and the Romans crucified Jesus. But God the Father raised Jesus back to life. That very day God poured out His Holy Spirit upon Jesus’ waiting disciples. Peter directed his listeners to repent and to be baptized in Jesus’ name for the forgiveness of their sins. Three thousand people believed God’s Word and were baptized that day.

God’s Holy Spirit is still at work, calling you and me to repentance and forgiveness in Jesus’ name. We can take comfort in our baptism, through which God poured His Holy Spirit, forgiveness and new life into each of our lives. Empowered  by God’s Spirit, we bear witness to the name of Jesus to those we encounter in our lives.

Included in this note is Luther’s explanation of the Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed. Also included is a prayer about the Holy Spirit from a book called, Prayers for Young Christians.

You are invited to wear read on Pentecost Sunday, June 9. We will dedicate our new red choir robes that day. The robes will be dedicated in memory of Ken Guile. We hope to take a picture of our congregation on St. Paul’s front steps that morning.

In Christ,
Pastor Holsten

THE THIRD ARTICLE (and Luther’s Explanation from the Small Catechism)

Sanctification

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

What does this mean?  I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me the true faith.

In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.

In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers.

On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ.

This is most certainly true.

A Prayer from Prayers for Young Christians

Based on Luther’s Small Catechism

By Barbara DeGrote-Sorenson and Roland Seboldt

Dear God,

I cannot thank you enough for the Holy Spirit in my life.

Your Spirit

Entered my life when I was baptized,

Led me to know Jesus and keeps him in my heart,

Make me a member of your Christian church,

Lifted my gloomy feelings by forgiving my sins,

Gave me the hope that my family and I will have

a new, everlasting life after we die.

Fill me with your Holy Spirit. Strengthen me to

believe, to love, to learn, to play, to live the life you

have in mind for me.  Amen.

SECRETARY’S
CORNER

June has been a popular month for weddings.

The month of June derives its name from Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage.  It was thought that couples who married in June would be blessed with prosperity and happiness.

The 1954 film “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” had a song called “June Bride”.

“OH! They say when you marry in June, you’re a bride all your life.  And the bridegroom who marries in June gets a sweetheart for a wife!”
